Google Search Is Dying...? [Content Made Simple]
Issue #257: Facebook's Super Bowl ad, Ring doorbells, and more.
TOP OF THE WEEK:
Google Search Is Dying
Quote:
Reddit is currently the most popular search engine. The only people who don’t know that are the team at Reddit, who can’t be bothered to build a decent search interface. So instead we resort to using Google, and appending the word “reddit” to the end of our queries.
Paul Graham thinks this image means Reddit as a social media site “still hasn’t peaked”. What it actually means is that the amount of people using Reddit as a search engine is growing.
Commentary:
This is one of the most interesting pieces I’ve read in 2022 so far! I do believe the reports of Google search’s impending death are greatly exaggerated, as the author concedes they may be toward the end of this piece, but it is a fascinating read nonetheless! Really technical look into some of how Google works and why more and more users may be getting frustrated. Sounds like a great time to be investing in Google search as a strategy, imo.
HITTING THE LINKS
Link #1: What Facebook's animatronic dog gets right.
Thoughtful writing here on the Facebook Meta Super Bowl ad.
What is the Metaverse for? It’s for nostalgia. It’s a place where you can recreate some version of the good-old-day, alongside the people that made them good. And (if they can pull it off), it’s a much better way platform for having new fun with old friends than anything else that exists today.
I’m not sure if
Link #2: Dance, I Said — Dance! And Leave the Package on the Porch.
Do you mean to suggest that everything is maybe downstream from content? Certainly not. :-)
The TikTok video begins with a fish-eye view of a porch. Beyond it lies a sunny footpath, a yard planted with a sapling, a homogeneous subdivision. We are amid the suburban dream, and yet the view is foreboding: We are peering out from a hidden surveillance camera, and a stranger is approaching the house. We watch him execute a slow variation on the electric slide and deposit a package at the door. Then, in the manner of a servant capitulating to the whims of his liege, he curtsies toward the lens. He does this because, as the TikTok user explains by way of an automated robotic voice-over, “I asked my Amazon driver to do a dance before he delivers my package.”
Link #3: Meta CEO Zuckerberg promotes Nick Clegg to lead on policy issues
Makes sense that they would do this!
Meta Platforms Inc CEO Mark Zuckerberg said in a Facebook post on Wednesday that he had promoted policy chief Nick Clegg into a larger role to lead on all policy matters, signaling less involvement from Zuckerberg in the area.
"We need a senior leader at the level of myself (for our products) and Sheryl (for our business) who can lead and represent us for all of our policy issues globally," Zuckerberg wrote, referring to Chief Operating Officer Sheryl Sandberg.
