I have basically come to the exact same conclusion. My kids are 5, 2, and 5 months, and I couldn’t imagine taking a job with a 30-60 minute commute (unless I had no other option). Incredibly grateful that WFH became so commonplace around the time we started having kids.

I have a similar work-from-home job, and I wouldn't trade it for the world. Even so, I go into the office nearly every day (I'm the boss, so I need to show up), but the commute is short, and I only stay a short while. I love the flexibility and the fact that I am twice as productive at home than at the water cooler.

Yes. That balance is so great. And being able to have such a short commute is the huge key there. I'd happily go to the office a couple times per week if I had a short drive!

As a recent retirie, I come from a different time than your generation. I am a baby boomer that worked in the production field( running a printing press)all of my life.I worked many hours at the print shop,25 years at just 1 company and yes my family did suffer from me not being at home, but my wife of 41 years was. We made the decision while the kids were growing up she would stay home. That was pretty common in my early adult years. I learned alot about team work and a good work ethic. I realize that the work is different than when I started out but I do have a concern for kids today that aren't willing to "go to work".

Helpful perspective, Dave. I think it's important to differentiate here between "going to work in an office" and "commuting" in the ways I describe in the article. I think working in an office is wonderful—I did it for years—but I don't know that it was worth the amount of time I spent in the car commuting back and forth to Nashville. I'd happily drive 10-15 minutes down the road to an office today, no problem. But the "commuter lifestyle" is what I mean to reject here in the article. :-)
